Professional skier Bode Miller won his first horse race as an owner when first-time starter Carving captured an $80,000 maiden-claiming race at Del Mar on Thursday. Trainer Bob Baffert and his wife, Jill, named their son Bode after the skier. Jill is co-owner of the 2-year-old colt, who went off at 5-1 in the race. The accompanying photo is jockey Chantal Sutherland, Bode Miller, Bob and Jill Baffert and their son Bode. Don’t know this for a fact, but I suspect the attractive blonde (the attractive blonde who isn’t Chantal Sutherland or Jill Baffert) is attached to Bode Miller.
Of course, Bode Baffert is the source of the name of the recently-retired Bodemeister, whom Ahmed Zayat named for the Baffert-trained colt who won the Arkansas Derby by 9 1/2 lengths before finishing second in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness to I’ll Have Another.
